The state of North Carolina offers an energy grant program that is open to Native Americans. The Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP) provides those who are approved for the program will receive a one-time grant to help pay for their energy bill. To qualify for the energy grant program you have to someone in your home who is a citizen, meet the income test, have reserves of less than $2,250, and be the person who is responsible for paying the utility bill. Native Americans who need food assistance in the state of North Carolina will find several options they can explore. The federal program called SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) provides those who qualify with a monthly grant that can be used to purchase food. The program requires that you have low income, meet asset limits, and be a citizen or legal alien. To apply, you can apply in person at your local Department of Social Services, mail in an application, or apply online. North Carolina also offers the federal food program called WIC (Women, Infant & Children). The program is open to those who are low income and are pregnant, breastfeeding, or who have children ages five and under. There is a cash assistance program available for Native Americans who need cash grants to help with living expenses. The program is called Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF). The program offers ongoing support for those in need, as well as emergency assistance. The program also offers an alternative to receiving ongoing assistance, which provides a one-time lump sum payment equal to three months of work assistance benefits. To qualify for TANF, you have to be a citizen or legal alien, meet low income requirements, have proof of identity, and have a child who lives with you. There is a pregnancy assistance program in the state of North Carolina that will help cover healthcare costs related to pregnancy. Called the State Maternity Home Fund, the program is open to those who live in the state, is pregnant and cannot stay in their own home, is experiencing an unplanned pregnancy, and meets low income requirements. To apply, visit your local Department of Social Services office. Native Americans may also qualify for the Medicaid program, which provides assistance paying for healthcare expenses.
